Entracte 1

Sat down to write something inspiring or, at the very least, depressing, yet could not finish – got stuck on the verbs while listening to the soundtrack of Amelie. It has been a nut of a day. No, a nut of a year. Will go back to it some other time.

So instead, decided to put down some of the quotes from Kundera’s The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Almost as depressing as the original story that I was writing. Serves me right. He he.

“There is no perfection, only life.”

“Dreaming is not merely an act of communication (or coded communication, if you like); it is also an aesthetic activity, a game of the imagination, a game that is a value in itself. Our dreams prove that to imagine–to dream about things that have not happened–is among mankind’s deepest needs. Herein lies the danger. If dreams were not beautiful, they would be quickly forgotten.”

“The heaviest of burdens crushes us, we sink beneath it, it pins us to the ground. But in love poetry of every age, the woman longs to be weighed down by the man’s body. The heaviest of burdens is therefore simultaneously an image of life’s most intense fulfillment. The heavier the burden, the closer our lives come to the earth, the more real and truthful they become. Conversely, the absolute absence of burden causes man to be lighter than air, to soar into heights, take leave of the earth and his earthly being, and become only half real, his movements as free as they are insignificant. What then shall we choose? Weight or lightness?”

“She had an overwhelming desire to tell him, like the most banal of women. Don’t let me go, hold me tight, make me your plaything, your slave, be strong! But they were words she could not say.
The only thing she said when he released her from his embrace was, ‘You don’t know how happy I am to be with you.’ That was the most her reserved nature allowed her to express.”

“Physical love is unthinkable without violence.”

“Indeed, the only truly serious questions are ones that even a child can formulate. Only the most naive of questions are truly serious. They are the questions with no answers. A question with no answer is a barrier that cannot be breached. In other words, it is questions with no answers that set the limit of human possibilities, describe the boundaries of human existence.” (Magnificent!)

“When the heart speaks, the mind finds it indecent to object.”

“And therein lies the whole of man’s plight. Human time does not turn in a circle; it runs ahead in a straight line. That is why man cannot be happy: happiness is the longing for repetition.” (I think this is brilliant)

“Tomas did not realize at the time that metaphors are dangerous. Metaphors are not to be trifled with. A single metaphor can give birth to love.”

“Perhaps all the questions we ask of love, to measure, test, probe, and save it, have the additional effect of cutting it short. Perhaps the reason we are unable to love is that we yearn to be loved, that is, we demand something (love) from our partner instead of delivering ourselves up to him demand-free and asking for nothing but his company.”

“The river flowed from century to century, and human affairs play themselves out on its banks. Play themselves out to be forgotten the next day, while the river flows on.”

  1. Thank you. It is what it is. Things always work out fine in the end. And if they do not, it is not the end.

Regarding the quotes being depressing, that is the reason why I cannot handle Kundera for too long. Read him in English and Russian (and a little Czech) and had to stop. Kind of like eating too many grapes – they are delicious yet after a while not fulfilling or satiating. Well, to me at least. 🙂

  2. Make sure you dream about something beautiful tonight. Just let yourself dream before you fall asleep. Fall asleep with a smile. Wake up with the smile tomorrow. It will be a better day!
